The Marin Headlands, just across the Golden Gate Bridge is home to Fort Army Barry and the Nike Missile Launch Site SF-88. This Cold War era missile battery was the final line of defense against Russian Bombers that survived the Navy and Air Force intercept squads.
The nuclear payloads of these rockets would detonate in front of the oncoming bombers to melt them in the sky before they could drop their payloads into the San Francisco Bay.
