First of all, YES, you are supposed to have Diana Ross in your ear now.
I’m attempting to work mostly in camera. The goal is to post the camera produced jpegs. It’s also an experimental platform for programming film simulations into the camera.
Oct 07, 2023:
San Francisco Photo Crawl MeetUp in Dolores Heights. The assignment is “scale,” to present the subject in relation to the environment. It turns out it’s more fun to find pictures that twist the scale. Hell, it’s still shooting on a Saturday. The only picture I made that I feel good about is this this flower (you know, the purple kind) reaching over the walkway as a resident passes.
So much for minimal processing though. The in camera original was way too flat. I wanted the filaments in the middle to look like they are reaching out to the sidewalk.
In any case.
The other picture I really enjoy is the light post at Castro and Elizabeth with the sun in the back. This is the camera original.
Sept 03, 2023:
This assignment was a Meetup Photo Crawl in Union Square in San Francisco. The challenge was to capture reflections, either in a window, to subjects that compliment each other. For this, I experimented with a formula that simulated Kodak Tri-X 4oo, which was my go to in community collage.
Someday, I would like to upload the jpegs straight from the camera. However, in this run, I needed to crop them in post. Except for one on my way to the club, I grabbed this image of t cable-cars passing on Geary in basic color. Then I processed it to a red (SEPIA) monochrome using the camera image editing tools. There are methods to set the crop in camera as well, but those will take some time. The (Q) menu on the camera can manage settings such as aspect ratio and save quality that may help make images that will need less processing.
On the way back to Powell Street BART, I came across an actual neon sign (most advertising signs are LED now) for John's Grill on Ellis Street, which is mentioned in Dashiell Hammett's novel, The Maltese Falcon. Inside, is a living photo album to the history and spirit of San Francisco. I had lunch there and checked out the "the Maltese Falcon Room" on the second floor. Next time I go back, I'll need to learn about the "Hammett Walks."
